Preventing the damage doesn't nullify the rest of the card's effect. Similarly, you'd still have Fleshcraft or Bonecraft put on you even if you prevented the 1 damage it does. (Relevant text: "Strike: 1 damage. Put this card on the opposing minion. The minion with this card...")

Dodge would escape all the offensive effects - the damage to you, and the card being put on you.

Yes, and no. Unless a strike says it's only usable at a given range (e.g. Thrown Sewer Lid), you can play it at the 'wrong' range, just to cycle the card. e.g. you can play Undead Strength at long range, however, it won't be effective.

Louhi wrote: If I'm not mistaken you also can't play prevent (requiring disciplines) against a withering since once put on the vampire disciplines can't be used anymore: groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/withering$20prevent/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/ERCum4RgtQ0/V8kVTy_37FIJ

You are, however, allowed to use prevent effects already in play (e.g. Unflinching Persistance)

The basic point is right - you can't play anything requiring disciplines once the card is on you, which is before you go on to prevent damage from the strike. You can play damage prevention effects that don't require disciplines, such as Glancing Blow.

So wouldn't this nullify the effect of the rest of the card?

Withering
[ani] Strike: 1R damage.
[thn] Strike: hand strike. Place this card on the opposing minion. The minion with this card has -1 strength. Burn this card during his or her controller's next discard phase.
[THN] As [thn] above, and the minion with this card cannot play cards that require any Disciplines.

Yes, that's the point I was making. You don't take damage from the hand strike, and you don't get the card put on you. Since the card isn't put on you (because of the Dodge), you don't suffer the effects that "the minion with this card" gets.
